Every spring for many years, a group of us get together to do what we love– ride ATVs and Side-by-Sides on the trails at Bass’ River Resort. In 2015, when a friend in our group was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, it changed everything. We also discovered that many of us knew someone who had dealt with a diagnosis or a close call; we decided to use our annual ride to spread the word and help others. In 2015, Riding For A Reason, Inc. was born and became a 501c.3 not-for-profit organization. Our mission is simple: to increase awareness of Colorectal Cancer prevention and raise money for individuals and organizations in need.
Colon Cancer is Preventable
Colorectal cancer, or colon cancer as it’s commonly known, is a “silent” cancer; most people don’t have any symptoms. It often starts as benign polyps inside the colon or rectum and unless they’re removed, they may turn cancerous. Colon cancer commonly affects men and women over the age of 50; however, it is on the increase in younger people.
Sadly, this cancer needlessly kills over 50,000 people a year. It is preventable. One way to avoid becoming a victim of colorectal cancer is by getting an annual exam, especially if someone in your family has had it or a related cancer. A simple, quick exam is only a slight inconvenience, yet people don’t want to do it. That’s why we ride–to educate people about how to prevent this disease. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death. By sharing in our mission, you can help stop the embarrassment of talking about it and spread the word.
The first year of Riding For A Reason, we were thrilled to be able to help local families and organizations with $17,000 raised by 600 people riding 237 bikes. In 2016, we made the Ride an “event” and were astounded when we had over 1200 people and 652 bikes and donations rose to nearly $60,000! With full hearts, we were able to help over twenty families in need as they battled colon and other cancers. We also donated to Siteman Cancer Center and local non-profit organizations like Steelville Fire, Steelville Ambulance District, and Steelville Ministerial Alliance & Food Pantry.
Because of you–our participants, sponsors, volunteers, and the local community, we are able to help so many and give hope to those suffering and in need.
“Riding For A Reason was founded for the sole purpose to raise awareness for colon cancer while doing what we love to do; riding ATVs and Side-by-Sides!”
